In het frans zegt men foutief: “Je m’excuse!”

You can't offer apologies, you can offer recovery payments

Excuse, read forgiveness or apology, you can't offer, but you can ask for it. If you owe the other you can ask him to excuse you, to forgive you. I got that from my friend, F. Bienfait:

In French people ask: “Excusez moi, please”, and that’s correct.  But in our culture of guilt, we apologize. Perhaps, completely unconsciously, it goes like this: we have already forgiven ourselves and offer the result, that forgiveness, then triumphantly to the other. In French they say wrongly: “Je m’excuse!” (i.e., I forgive myself)*.

Perhaps this is also what Arnon Grunberg meant when he writes in his NRC paper "Recovery payments are a bitter necessity" (of 1 August 2020): "Although recovery payments should never be confused with forgiveness and forgetting, I believe that a society or a culture in which forgiveness is dismissed as weakness or worse, collaboration, has no future, deserves no future".

As a country we can still ask Indonesia for forgiveness on 17 August**, for the 156,229 people who died during the decolonization war 1945-1949 in the Dutch East Indies. In Jakarta last March 10, the king offered his "apologies" for our colonial violence, our "blots of shame"; well-meaning, but not saying anything: he did not ask for forgiveness.

The names of 6,229 soldiers who died are written on the columns of the National Indies Monument in Roermond. Of the ~150,000 Indonesian victims at least 786 are commemorated at a monument in Candi, near Kebumen (see my blog of 23-10-2017).
